As a stop on a Transylvanian tour, József Nyírő's play Juliet the Fair Maiden, based on the well-known ballad, was premiered in Csíkszereda in August 1933, just eighty years ago. The music was composed by Károly Keresztes and the sets were designed by Rezső Haáz.

Juliet the Fair Maiden by the Harghita Ensemble

To mark the anniversary, the ballad of Nyírő is being adapted by the Harghita National Szekler Folk Ensemble in a new programme.

The company has used internal resources to stage the piece. The direction was undertaken by Szilveszter Kelemen and two of his colleagues, Gabriella Kősa and Robert Böjte, all three of them dancers of the ensemble. It is a bold undertaking on their part, as it is the first time they have worked with a professional ensemble in this capacity.

Their interpretation is practically a completely new creation, an experiment in dance theatre. In some cases they use dance, in others they use silent theatre to guide the audience through the story. These elements are used to combine the beautiful Szekler dances from the Küküllőmenti to the Felcsik dances, which are performed to the high standard to which the ensemble's dance troupe is accustomed.

The show was performed by the Heveder orchestra.

The Harghita Ensemble premiered the new production, which was put together at the suggestion of the institution's maintainer, on Saturday, 3 August, as part of the Days of the City of Csíkszereda.
