The premiere of the joint production of the Harghita National Szekler Folk Ensemble and the Csík Theatre will take place on Friday, December 20, starting at 19:00. The performance is valid for the Bánk bán season ticket and tickets are available for the remaining seats.
Based on János Garay's humorous narrative poem The Obsitos, the music for the stage play is by Zoltán Kodály, with lyrics by Béla Paulini and Zsolt Harsányi. Kodály started writing Háry János in opposition to folk plays impregnated with art song. Háry, the protagonist, a simple peasant with a rich imagination, is a legendary figure. In this way, according to Kodály, his deeds are truer than history. He is not simply a grand narrator, but a character with an inexhaustible thirst for storytelling and adventure, a talent for colouring fictional stories, a philosopher of life speaking in the voice of the people. It was in this character and story that Kodály saw the possibility of giving Hungarian folk song its rightful place on the stage.
In the tavern in Nagyabony, men gather in the evenings to listen to the stories of János Háry from his days as a hussar, then a bodyguard at the Viennese court and captain in the imperial army. Though the tales seem impossible, we like to believe they could have happened.
