What makes a Hungarian Hungarian? If we are honest at least with ourselves, we have to admit that the answer is entirely subjective, almost uniquely personal: depending on our upbringing, our artistic background and our emotions, it is what we call it.
Man is weak: when he likes something, he tries to get it. And fashion is a great master: if there is a role model, whether we like it or not, we adopt it, because if it is good for him, it must be good for him. Then we adapt what is already ours to our own taste.
The Hungarian peasant society, with its strong ancient cultural roots, has been constantly shaped throughout history by a dual influence. On the one hand, it has tried to follow the fashions of the higher (social) orders, and on the other hand, it has drawn from neighbouring peoples in constant interaction. What it adopted, it shaped over time, incorporated into its own, incorporating it into its everyday life: it explained and folklorised it. It is important to emphasise this reciprocity, because Hungarian folk culture has significantly shaped the culture of the peoples of the Carpathian Basin through its unconventional radiance.
As with everything else, this applies to dance and dance music. "Dance music (and thus instrumental folk music, since it is essentially dance music) has always been influenced by the cord dance," says László Kelemen in a study.
In our new programme we draw from the deeper layers of Hungarian folk (dance) music and dance for the audience. We will present mostly dances that the ethnic community that lives and breathes them has considered and still considers important to call Hungarian.
