Hungarian folk art, folk dance and folk music are uniquely rich and special. The Carpathian Basin lies at the intersection of East and West, and from a cultural and historical point of view it is a border region of Western Europe. The dominant fashion trends in European art history reached this area, but had no influence eastwards. Civilisation in historic Hungary only became widespread in the second half of the 19th century, and so the rural culture of the Carpathian Basin, which had been erased by industrialisation and urbanisation to the west, was still present in the regions of the Carpathian Basin until recently. This is why our exceptionally rich dance tradition still preserves the many varieties of European styles, from the circle dances common in the Middle Ages to the leaping dances, the Renaissance couples' dances and the more recent style of the Csárdás.

The programme "Centuries of Hungarian Dance" aims to present the historical and regional structure of Hungarian folk dance, its cultural background and its European cultural-historical context. The performance is presented in a light, informative style, richly illustrated with dance and music, and describes the different types of dance, the characteristics of the musical accompaniment and the folk costumes. The show is recommended for primary and secondary school students and for anyone interested in the uniquely exciting world of Hungarian folk art, folk dance and folk music.
